One currency caveat that is ours to state rather than yours to discover: the QLD register is the department's 'State and non-state school details' CSV, whose latest published revision dates from 2022 and whose enrolment column reads July 2019, so a Queensland school opened since then has no point even though its catchment may be returned. VIC, WA, SA and ACT registers are current, and NSW is refreshed by its department. Data values sourced from ACARA's Data Access Program are not delivered through this API in any state: that covers the My School measures (ICSEA, its percentile, enrolments, teaching staff) and the identity and descriptive attributes that used to travel with them (acara_id, type, sector, year_range). One ACARA-sourced field is delivered deliberately, school_url, because it is a hyperlink to the school's own website: it points at a third party's resource rather than reproducing anyone's dataset, and it is where you can look up under the terms that apply to you what this API no longer carries. School type and sector are supplied instead from the state open registers as school_type and school_sector, so they appear on exactly the rows that carry a school point. Measured against the catchment data this API actually serves rather than against its upstream sources: NSW 2,156 of 2,172 catchments, VIC 1,534 of 1,566, QLD 1,520 of 1,574, SA 130 of 130, ACT 86 of 92, and nowhere else. TAS is 0 of 149, for the licence reason above. Catchment data rebuilds annually while the point registers refresh far more often, so these denominators move once a year: the QLD catchment layer upstream is already at 1,584 against the 1,574 served. The values below are the ones this API actually delivers on CATCHMENT rows, which is narrower than what the registers publish, because the catchment layers themselves cover government schools only: school_sector is 'Government' on every delivered catchment row in all five states, so filtering catchments for Catholic or Independent returns nothing and always will. That restriction is a property of the catchment layers, not of the point registers: poi.schools_500m reads the same registers directly and does return non-government schools in VIC, QLD, WA and ACT. school_type is the register's own label and the registers do not share a vocabulary, so treat them as separate label sets rather than one code list. On catchment rows: VIC delivers 'Primary', 'Secondary' or 'Pri/Sec'; NSW delivers 'Primary School', 'Secondary School', 'Central/Community School' or 'Infants School'; QLD delivers 'State School', 'State High School' or 'Community School'; SA delivers 'Primary Education', 'Secondary Education' or 'Primary/Secondary Combined'; ACT delivers 'Primary', 'High' or 'College'. The registers carry further values (VIC 'Special' and 'Language', NSW 'Schools for Specific Purposes', 'Environmental Education Centre' and 'Other School', QLD 'Non-State School' — the second most common value in that register at 525 of 1,774 — plus 'Special School', 'School of Distance Education', 'Specific Purpose School' and 'Educational Unit'; SA 'Special Education' and 'Aboriginal/Anangu Schools'; ACT 'Early' and 'Other') that no catchment row currently resolves to; they can appear if the catchment layers widen, so do not treat these lists as closed enumerations. There is no open replacement for year_range or the ACARA identifier, so those fields are gone with nothing behind them. The `established` field is unaffected and still delivered: despite arriving in the same file it comes from the NSW data.nsw school register (Date_1st_teacher) rather than from ACARA, it is CC BY like the coordinates and carries the same attribution obligation. It is a NSW value, so it is delivered only on NSW rows. Accuracy caveat on both school_url and established: they are attached to a catchment by matching the school's name, and the matcher that built the catchment files in production compared names without regard to state, so a school in one state could take the website and founding date of a same-named school in another. That join now filters by state, which makes an interstate match impossible, but the catchment files rebuild annually, so until each state's next rebuild the response also checks each school website's own domain against the row's state and withholds the link when they disagree, and withholds `established` on any non-NSW row. Both fields therefore point at the right state; within a state, a link can still land on the wrong school where two schools share a name stem, so treat school_url as indicative until we record the fix here.","soil_regional":"Australian Soil Classification order (asc_name, e.g. Sodosols) from the nearest sample on a roughly 0.1 degree national grid, with distance_km showing how far away that sample was taken.
