Moderate Heat
Summer surface temps near the metro median

Some streets run hotter. Know yours.

Satellite-measured summer surface temperature, urban density, and greenery, combined into one per-address heat score. Free for any address in Australia.

Check your address How it works

The forecast is for the city. Your street is its own climate.

Hard surfaces, dark roofs and treeless streets store heat. The difference is measurable from orbit.

New estates run hot

Treeless new suburbs with dark roofs and full-lot coverage routinely measure hotter than leafy established areas in the same city.

Heat is a running cost

A hotter microclimate means more cooling, higher summer bills, and harsher outdoor spaces for decades.

You can't see it at inspection

A Saturday morning inspection tells you nothing about February afternoons. Satellite thermal data does.

Four addresses, one thermal story.

From a treeless new estate to a forested ridge — building heights coloured by how much heat they store, with the measured surface temperatures in the panel.

Measured from orbit, anchored nationally.

Three signal layers, with the response telling you which one produced the score.

Satellite surface temperature

NASA MODIS thermal imagery of summer land-surface temperature, aggregated across multiple summers with a cloud-robust median. This is the measured heat of the actual surface around the address.

Climate baseline

Five years of summer air temperature from ERA5 climate reanalysis provides the regional baseline, and the fallback where satellite pixels are unusable.

Local surface factors

Building density and greenspace around the address sharpen the picture: hard surface concentration versus tree cover is what separates neighbouring streets.

Two streets, the same February afternoon.

This is the pattern the satellite measures over and over: treeless new estates store heat that leafy streets shed. Same city, same hour — different surfaces.

Score bands are anchored against a 350-point national sweep of residential land-surface temperatures, so 'Hot' means hot relative to how Australians actually live, not an arbitrary threshold.

What we measure, and what we don't

Every response includes a source flag: whether the score came from satellite measurement or fell back to the climate baseline where satellite data was unusable.

Surface temperature is not air temperature. It is the better predictor of how a street stores and radiates heat, which is what the score is for.
